A Mighty Long Way is a memoir of one of the nation’s most significant civil rights battles – the integration of Arkansas’s Little
Rock Central High School -- as seen through the eyes of a 14-year-old girl, who along with eight other black students, would help
to alter the landscape of American education.
In the spring of 1957, when Carlotta Walls signed up to attend the all-white Central High School, she didn’t intend to do anything
heroic. Central was conveniently located less than a mile from her home, and her parents had always encouraged her to seek out the
best educational opportunities available. But that one simple act—writing her name on a list—changed the course of her life, her family’s
and this country.
